2016 is just a few hours away, ladies and gents. Everyone is getting ready to celebrate the New Year and so am I. As a full-time dreamer, I look forward to a New Year filled with possibilities, adventures and, of course, dreams becoming reality. There’s no better way to wish you all a great time than […]

]]>There’s no better way to wish you all a great time than a multilingual video, don’t you think? So, here it is!
The team at Move Hub put together the following clip in a bid to capture as many languages as they could: “We clocked up 27 languages and captured many happy revelers wanting to wish their friends and family overseas a happy 2016. While you may have heard some of these languages (for example, English, if you are reading this without Google Translator), but others like Garifuna may be new to you. Garifuna, listed on UNESCO’s vulnerable language list, is from St. Vincent in the Caribbean, but can be found in Central American countries Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, where it is critically endangered.”
Before saying goodbye – or ciao, or adieu – to 2015, I feel like sharing with you some most inspirational language articles I’ve read online over the past year.

]]>Before you read this article, be sure to take a look at the most delightful attractions and sights of Nice.
Done? Okay, let’s dive in!
Nice offers a wide variety of entertainment to people from all walks of life. It’s impossible to count them all! I’m happy to share with you some of the most interesting ones.
The Old Town is one of the most charming and picturesque areas of Nice. Residents, expats and visitors gather around in Cours Saleya (especially in the mornings), where the flower, fruit and vegetable markets take place.
The friendly atmosphere, the colorful food and the scents of fresh produce and flowers will embrace you and put you in a good mood. I speak from personal experience, it’s a place full of life, energy and good vibes. A must-see!
Here’s my suggestion: follow your instincts, let yourself be guided by the scents and don’t be afraid to get lost in the meander of streets. You’ll find your way. The sea is always around the corner.
Fancy a fun and adventurous beach activity? Well then, parasailing is for you! You can book your session any day or just pay on the spot.
Good points: the adrenaline rush, the awesome view from above.
Bad points: #1. The price. It costs 45 euros for one person, 60 euros if you go with someone and 90 if you choose a triple ride. It’s expensive, especially if you go by yourself.
#2. It’s not for everyone. It can be a thrilling experience for a person and a scary or uncomfortable one for another.
#3. It lasts seven or so minutes. Not much, uh?
The tour starts from the Promenade des Anglais and it gives you the chance to see the most famous sights of the city. It takes you up, on the Castle Hill, and it stops there for 10 minutes, giving you the time to explore your surroundings. One of the things I enjoyed the most – as a language learner – was the audio commentary available in multiple languages (French, English, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian and Japanese). Hooray!
The tour lasts 45 minutes or so and it costs 8 € for adults and 4 € for children – a pretty good deal!
I can assure you, it’s totally worth the price and I personally recommend it. It’s a wonderful way to discover Nice, especially if you’re short on time, because you get to admire the ‘heart’ of the city.
Vélo Bleu is a handy way to to get around Nice during your stay. You can rent a bike for one day with 1 € and you’ll get the bike for a whole week with 5 €. You can use the bike, anywhere, as often as you want, for 30 minutes each day. If you go over the free 30 minutes, you need to pay 1 € for every extra hour.
It’s incredible to go cycling along the dazzlingly blue sea – I can’t express with words how relaxing and enjoyable it is!

This isn’t a comprehensive list of activities you can enjoy around Nice, I just mentioned a few of them. You may want to visit the Nice Tourisme website for more.

]]>Last year I had the opportunity to spend 3 weeks in France and visit the marvellous Côte d’Azur.
We’re in the middle of summer now, so it seems like the perfect time to look back at my amazing trip and share some of my favourite memories with you.
As I photographed, explored and discovered the French Riviera, I couldn’t help but be over-awed by the beauty of this place and its surroundings. Once I set foot in Nice, I fell deeply in love with the city.
The magic of Nice lies in its rich and diverse heritage with both architectural and natural treasures to admire.
There’s a wonderful mix of old and new in Nice when it comes to art and architecture.
Whether your artistic tastes lean towards the Baroque style of the Cathédrale de Sainte Réparate or you’d rather look for Russian-style Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas, Nice has something for you.
I have put together a list of my favourite spots that you cannot ignore while staying in Nice.
(Clicking on the pictures will enlarge them for you.)
If you love taking long walks, then you could spend hours just strolling, smiling and breathing some fresh air along the blue sea.
I remember walking down the Promenade des Anglais every day and never getting tired of the view.
The famous Negresco hotel is situated over there and you definitely cannot miss it! It’s Nice’s most popular hotel and it oozes grace and luxury.
Getting lost in the streets of the Old Town is a remarkable experience.
The so-called Vieux Nice will charm you with its artisan shops, bars, cafés, brasseries and markets. You’ll find – among many others – fish markets, flower markets, antique markets, fruit and vegetable markets – I could go on forever. Trust me, it’s really tempting to stop in every single one of them and buy something.
The Old Town is packed with tourists and locals from morning till night, so you’ll always find someone to talk to in a restaurant or bar.
I recommend making the Cathédrale de Sainte Réparate a part of your itinerary. Built between 1650 and 1699, the Baroque Cathédrale is indeed beautiful and worth a visit!
Address: 3 Place Rossetti, Nice
It takes its name from Giuseppe Garibaldi and his statue stands proudly in the square, which is crossed by a tramline and is always full of people, even during the night.
Basilique Notre-Dame is both beautiful and historical as you can see from the pictures I snapped of the glorious façade.
Address: 2 Rue d’Italie, Nice
Place Masséna is the main square of the city and it’s at the bottom of the avenue Jean-Médecin, Nice’s main shopping street, which boasts of shopping centers. Nice Étoile and Galleries Lafayette are probably the most popular ones. Be careful: If you’re like me, you may end up spending a little too much on souvenirs. Ahem.
Nice offers breathtaking panoramic views from its hills, le colline du Château.
The park is massive and it makes a good spot to take wonderful pictures. Grab your camera and just get lost in there. It’s worth the walk up, but if you don’t feel like climbing, you can always opt for the lift.
Address: Rue des Ponchettes, Rue de Foresta, Montée Montfort, Nice
A beautiful museum showcasing the works of French-Russian painter Marc Chagall. It’s not free, although ticket prices are moderate and you can get a discount if you’re an university student.
Address: Avenue du Docteur Ménard, Nice

]]>Language and culture go hand in hand. They are inseparably intertwined.
Learning the history and culture of a country will help you understand its language to a deeper level.
That’s why I want to share with you three online magazines about Italy’s cultural scene and lifestyle.
My personal favourite! La Civetta is a bilingual magazine about Italy and all things Italian. It is run by students from Italy and the UK and published by the Italian department at the University of Bristol.
La Civetta features articles on a wide range of topics related to Italy and its culture: travel and cuisine, cinema festivals and concerts, art exhibitions and food festivals. As a further benefit, it will significantly improve your reading comprehension, since you can read the articles in both English and Italian.
» View all issues of “La Civetta” «
I decided to include this one because it’s the oldest Italian-American newspaper in the US. It’s a must! Plus, you can actually read a couple of pages of the latest issues for free. Go here, click on “free preview” and then on “continue your free trial” . You can also find some free content on the website, like recipes and up-to-date news. Melissa is a regular contributor of the magazine and that’s definitely a bonus.
This one is specifically about Rome which is one of the liveliest cities of Italy, besides being its capital. The magazine allows you to keep track with current events and “la vita mondana” of the eternal city.
Check out the latest issue of Romeing, which provides a guide to the best gelato in Rome and a lot of tips on where to hang out this summer!
È un must!
* Italian Vocabulary and Idioms | Vocaboli e modi di dire italiani
– Vanno di pari passo (go hand in hand). You can also say “vanno a bracetto“.
– Sono inscindibili (indivisibili and inseparabili are two synonyms of this word.)

So, yeah, it’s been awhile.
The good news is that I haven’t been eaten by a creepy zombie. Phew, I’m still alive. Yay for me!
The bad news is that I’m not a female leader in a supernatural world…
But I digress.
In a few words: university has taken over my life. Completely.
It sounds like a lame excuse, I know. I wish I could tell you that I was in Narnia this whole time. Life’s been pretty hectic since I started my university life and I’m always on the go.
I’m struggling to find some free time but I want to keep this blog thing going.
This is just a quick post but I have an excellent guest post coming for you, so stay tuned!
PS: The title is an old Italian saying which means that you will see again whomever does not die. It’s something like the English expression “Long time no see”.

]]>I still can’t believe I’m actually here. Seriously. I’m in love with this city. There’s no so much chaos as in Rome and the people I’ve met so far are really lovely and kind.
Do I need to mention the sea? It is très, très beau and that’s why I call it mon paradis bleu.
I always feel so calm and relaxed when I go to the beach. I feel like I’m breathing again.
Rome is a metropolitan city and the pace is always so fast that I had forgotten what it feels like to properly relax and enjoy every single moment of the day.
[caption id="attachment_716" align="aligncenter" width="600"] I’m not staying at the Hotel Gounod but it’s such a nice building. I love it![/caption]
Oui.
I’m mixing up languages! As you can see from this article, I’m speaking a mix of English and French here! Plus, I’m struggling to pronounce some French words.
Par exemple, I’ve asked for a chain (chaîne) instead of a chair (chaise) in a shop! Whoops!
Unfortunately, I have no time to do anything blog related. I am so so so sorry for the messages I have yet to check. Forgive me, s’il vous plaît.
I’ve received so many encouraging words and I will reply to each and everyone of you as soon as possible. Bear with me.
I’ve also decided to postpone the deadline of the FlashSticks giveaway. You have time until September 30th to send me an email with your entry at runawaydaydreamer91(at)gmail.com. Read more!
How are you spending your summer? Are you learning a new language? Awakening an old one? Travelling abroad? Dis–moi!
Come stai trascorrendo l’estate? Stai imparando una nuova lingua? Rispolverando una che già conosci? Sei in viaggio all’estero? Dis–moi!

Yes, it’s France the top-secret destination I’ll be visiting this month for the very first time. Gustavo was the only one who guessed it, but I want to thank everyone who took the time to leave a comment: Natalie, Melissa, Frank, Lindsay and Isabella. I really appreciate it.
I do know why you guys were thinking about the United States or England. I show my love for English speaking countries at every given opportunity. However, I couldn’t plan a trip to the States in such a short period of time so I picked France, since I’m currently learning la langue de l’amour and I’ve always wanted to visit la Cote D’Azur. (Cute rhyme, uh? )
I’m lucky enough to spend 21 days or so in the country.
Let’s get things straight: I’m not starting from scratch. I’ve already a basic knowledge of French.
I have a plan, though. I want to become fluent and I want to reach a B2 level by the end of this year. This means that I need to leave France with a good command of the language. Will I be able to accomplish this task?
Stay tuned on the blog and on my social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter and Google+) if you don’t want to miss any update.
Plus, don’t forget to join the giveaway! I bet you like getting free stuff, don’t you?

]]>Summer is here. The temperatures are already pretty high in Rome. The sun always shines and lights my way when I go out. I love the feeling of sunrays on my skin. I love the smell of flowers all around me.
Rome is as magnificent as ever, but it’s even nicer to see the Spanish Steps covered with colourful and bright flowers. They give that extra special touch to the square.

I’ll enjoy the entire month of August in the eternal city, but I’ll be travelling abroad in July.
That’s right. I’m going to spend three weeks in a country I’ve always wanted to visit! I’m as happy as a child on Christmas day!
Most of my friends already know the destination, but I thought it would be fun to not announce it straight away on the blog. I want you to guess it!
I’d love to read your guesses in the comments below, so don’t forget to share them.
Speaking of travels, my friend Lindsay, from Lindsay Does Languages, has launched a brand new travel blog, Mundo Trundle. Check it out!
Plus, a big surprise is coming on Monday! Are you following me on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ yet?

]]>The post How does one become Italian? Is it a matter of citizenship or just a state of mind? appeared first on Learn a new language while having fun and exploring the world | Runaway Daydreamer.
]]>I was inspired to write this post by the experience of a Canadian actress, Lisa Ray. She recently took a trip to Italy and fell completely in love with the country.
It is always exciting to see someone opens his or her heart to new people, new places, new cultures.
That’s what she did. She embraced the Italian lifestyle fully and completely. She left a piece of herself in every city she visited: Rome, Capri, Pisa, Florence, Venice and so on.
It is pretty clear that she enjoyed la dolce vita since she always had something nice to say about every place she discovered and explored.
Among her many quotes, one took my attention and it is the one that I’ve chosen for the title of this article
How does one become Italian? Is it a matter of citizenship or just a state of mind?
Click To Tweet
You may not have an Italian citizenship but does it really matter? You’re passionate about what the country has to offer. You love its history, food, people, traditions. That’s what counts.
You belong where your heart belongs.
I know that Italy has stolen the heart of many people. Melissa is one of them and she talks about that in her personal website.
I love reading blogs of foreigners or expats living in Italy. It’s beautiful to see your country through expats eyes. Sometimes they make you appreciate even the tiniest details that you completely ignored before.
[caption id="attachment_374" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Did you know #Pinocchio comes from #Tuscany?[/caption]
Click To Tweet
